Rabat: The Capital Nobody Bothers to Visit (But Should)

The Quiet Sibling

Everyone goes to Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes. Poor Rabat gets ignored because it's the administrative capital and people think it's boring. Honestly, Rabat is the best place to recharge. The streets are clean, the traffic is normal, and nobody harasses you in the medina.

The Kasbah of the Udayas

This is my favorite spot in the city. It's a 12th-century fortress built right where the river meets the ocean. Inside, the walls are painted blue and white (like a mini Chefchaouen). There's a famous cafe inside called Café des Oudayas. Sit there, order some almond cookies, and watch the surfers in the water below.

Chellah

A short taxi ride from the center brings you to Chellah. It's a crazy mix of ancient Roman ruins and an Islamic necropolis. Nature has basically taken over, and massive storks have built huge nests on top of the old stone pillars. It's incredibly peaceful and weirdly romantic to walk through.

Modern Vibes

Rabat also has a very cool modern side. The new Grand Theatre designed by Zaha Hadid looks like a spaceship landed on the riverbank. There's a great tram system, meaning you don't have to argue with taxi drivers to get around. It's the perfect city to spend a relaxed two days eating good food and enjoying a slower pace.
